Arsenal offer 3rd contract to Reiss Nelson
- Arsenal makes a third contract offer to Reiss Nelson, trying to keep him at the club despite his previous rejections.
- Nelson’s current deal expires in the summer, and other clubs, including Brighton and Ligue 1 club Nice, are interested in him.
- If Nelson moves to a club like Brighton, he might not get more game time, but staying at Arsenal allows him to showcase his talents despite less playing time.
James Benge reports for CBS Sports that Arsenal are still trying to keep Reiss Nelson at the club, despite his previous rejections of their contract offers.
Nelson’s current deal is up in the summer, and Arsenal had made two unsuccessful attempts to get him to extend it. But Benge reports that the Gunners have now made a third offer, submitting it to him earlier this week.
The 23-year-old’s current cameo role in the Arsenal squad reportedly may not appeal to him, with Brighton among the clubs interested in picking him up on a free transfer.
Foreign clubs are also in for Nelson, with Ligue 1 club Nice mentioned as a possible destination.
It’s a tricky situation for Nelson, especially since a move to a club like Brighton wouldn’t necessarily make him any likelier to start matches.
Nelson plays his best football on the left wing, where Brighton have a nailed-on starter in Kaoru Mitoma.
If Nelson drops further down the league to guarantee minutes, he may end up in a team where he lacks the freedom to express his talents and play his best football.
Whatever you might say about his game-time at Arsenal, Nelson has regularly shown he’s a good fit for the team this season.
So it’s a balancing act, trying to get on the pitch more often but ensuring that’s at a club where he can be useful. It’s up to him whether he thinks Arsenal can help him to do both.
