BBC Sport pundit cries over Bruno Fernandes celebrating Manchester United win

Manchester United are celebrating winning the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton after a penalty shootout at Wembley.

Manchester United fans in attendance at Wembley and watching around the world were elated after seeing Solly March sky his penalty over the bar.

This set up Victor Lindelof to score the winning spot-kick, booking Manchester United a place in the final against rivals City.

Understandably, Manchester United’s players were thrilled to get the win. The pain of a penalty shootout defeat in Gdansk still lives long in the memory. There was also a loss to Middlesbrough on spot-kicks in between, too.

David de Gea didn’t get near saving any against Villarreal and nor did he against Brighton. It was always going to require the opponents missing the target, for United to get the advantage.

BBC pundit upset with Fernandes

Despite the obvious reason for Manchester United being overjoyed, apparently the players were over-celebrating.

BBC pundit Chris Sutton hit out with a bitter message on Twitter, saying the Red Devils did not deserve to win and Fernandes’ celebrations was distasteful.

He wrote: “Well done Manchester United, but the better team on the day lost. Bruno celebrating March’s miss wasn’t a great moment…”

Quite why Fernandes is being singled out, is anyone’s guess. Manchester United’s players had every right to celebrate, especially after the pain of defeat on Thursday night.

Fernandes in particular was nursing an injury and unable to contribute to the shootout, and had to watch on like a fan.

And for the record, Manchester United were every bit as good as Brighton too, who had a week’s rest before the game – and scored more penalties, which is ultimately what matters.

We suggest Sutton dries his eyes, and lets Manchester United fans carry on celebrating.
