Bold new Maddison statement to Levy and Newcastle is great news for West Ham

Leicester have made a bold new James Maddison statement to Spurs and Newcastle which is great news for West Ham over Harvey Barnes.

West Ham have been heavily linked with a move for flying attacker Harvey Barnes following his relegation with Leicester City.

Both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur had looked to be a real problem for the Hammers, though, with Ange Postecoglou and Eddie Howe also rumoured to be interested.

Journalist Matt Law has claimed that West Ham were leading the race for Barnes, with Newcastle and Spurs also circling.

Then The Guardian stated West Ham boss David Moyes wants to wrap up a deal to sign the 25-year-old England international as soon as possible.

Newcastle and Spurs have also been locked in a two-way battle to sign Barnes’ Leicester teammate James Maddison – a one-time West Ham target himself.

Reports had circulated claiming Leicester valued both players at £50m.

And focus at Tottenham and Newcastle seems to have shifted solely to playmaker Maddison given both clubs have excellent options in the wide left forward role.

That is good news for the Hammers – and so too is the latest emerging from the King Power.

Yesterday evening Sky Sports claimed Leicester had informed the Magpies and Tottenham Hotspur that they see Maddison as their “strongest asset” and want over £50m for him.

If that is the case then the Foxes must value Barnes at less – making a deal much more realistic for West Ham.

Indeed the same report claims West Ham have confirmed their interest in Barnes, who Leicester do indeed value at around £10m less.

“Leicester want a fee in excess of £50m for James Maddison, amid strong interest from Newcastle and Tottenham in the England international,” Sky Sports report.

“The Foxes consider Maddison their strongest asset and will not be deterred from their valuation despite being relegated and the midfielder having only one year left on his contract.

“Newcastle and Spurs are both pushing to sign Maddison and confident in their own right over their ability to bring him to their club…

“West Ham are one of a number of the clubs interested in Barnes and Leicester also believe he is worth north of £40m.”
