Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool might sign a player who hasn’t even been linked with them

Liverpool could still do something totally unexpected in the transfer market, and sign a player out of nowhere.

That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who gave an update on the Reds transfer dealings for his Here We Go Podcast on Wednesday.

“During last and this week Liverpool had some conversations with people close to Gabri Veiga,” Romano explains. “He’s a very electric player, I really like him, I think he’s one of the best young players in the world. Liverpool are one of the most interested clubs in this player. We had reports of a done deal with Newcastle, that is not the case at all. Liverpool are really interested in Gabri Veiga – there is a release clause €40m [£34m] this is a big opportunity for Liverpool and they are thinking about that.

“Is the player worth the money, is that the player that we need. This is the moment to think about the next step.”

Interestingly, Romano did also suggest that Liverpool might be working on something away from prying eyes. We all know the players most linked: Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone, Veiga etc. But according to the transfer expert, the Reds might have something else entirely up their sleeve.

“Gabri Veiga is a name, Thuram is a name, Kone is a name. But honestly, I would not be surprised if Liverpool go for a player we didn’t mention today or another opportunity,” said Romano. “Because they are like this. They like to find the right opportunity.”

Liverpool plotting under the radar

At this point, it would be really nice to hear some different names thrown into the mix for Liverpool. Thuram, Kone, Veiga, Gravenberch, Lavia. All have been reliably linked and all would – within reason – be good players for the Reds.

But things don’t really seem to be advancing at all. As is the trouble with today’s constant need for transfer updates, Liverpool fans may be starting to feel a little bit of fatigue around hearing the same names mentioned with no genuine, tangible progress being made.

A fresh link would help to reignite the feeling that Liverpool are actively working and not standing still.

In terms of exactly who that could be though, we have absolutely no idea. The likes of high-profile movers Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice are out of the question, but beyond that it’s anyone’s guess.

It is strange for Liverpool’s transfer targets to be so openly discussed in the press, though. The Reds do usually like to retain an air of mystery around their dealings. As a result, we’re with Romano, we might have to expect the unexpected Fabinho-esque bolt from the blue.

In that case our money would perhaps be on additions from the Bundesliga, given Jorg Schmadtke’s appointment. But casting an eye over the German top-flight, it’s impossible to pin someone down, Kone aside.

Personally, we think whoever decides to go for RB Salzburg’s Lucas Gourna-Douath might be onto something. Warren Zaire-Emery from PSG could be another outside bet. I guess we’ll just have to see what happens.
