Internationals: Ziyech and Lukaku net and big win for Joao Felix

Three Chelsea players were in international action on Saturday, with Joao Felix helping Portugal to a comfortable victory, but Hakim Ziyech and Romelu Lukaku’s goals were both scored in vain as they failed to win.

Hakim Ziyech was involved in the earlier of the day’s games, as Morocco travelled to South Africa in qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations, and it produced the continent’s big upset of this international week.

The home side went into the game on an impressive 16-game winning run, but were still the underdogs as they hosted Ziyech and last year’s World Cup semi-finalists. However, South Africa took a fortunate lead as the Morocco keeper dropped a cross into his goal and they extended their lead after the break.

Ziyech pulled one back with a fine strike, cutting in from the byline and curling a low shot inside the far post from a tight angle, setting up a thrilling conclusion to the game, but Morocco weren’t able to find the second they needed to salvage a draw.

Romelu Lukaku captained Belgium but also ended the evening without a win to show for his goal. He did at least secure one point in European Championship qualifying, though, as his equaliser gave Belgium a 1-1 draw at home against Austria.

The visitors went into the game unbeaten in the current qualifying campaign and top of their group, underlining why they had started in such good form by taking the lead in the first half, although it was arguably against the run of play and came via an own goal by Orel Mangala.

The home side ramped up the pressure after the break as they attempted to level the scores, and they did so in style through Lukaku, as the striker rocketed an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner to make the final score 1-1.

There was also an emotional moment after the final whistle, too, as former Chelsea star Eden Hazard was given a fond farewell by the Belgian fans after the final whistle following his international retirement at the end of last year.

The exception was Joao Felix, who may not have found the net but did end up on the winning side, as Portugal strolled to a 3-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina in Euros qualifying to extend their 100 per cent record in the competition so far. Bernardo Silva opened the scoring just before time and Bruno Fernandes netting twice in the second half.
