Les Bleus: Mbappé’s stunning goal stat after Gibraltar win

Mbappé‘s strike from the spot to make it 3-0 as France cruised to victory in their Euro 2024 qualifier in Gibraltar marked the 22nd time in his last 20 France outings that the Boy from Bondy has found the back of the net.

That’s an average of more than one goal per game, which is simply sensational – especially considering that the only points of comparison for this frenetic scoring rate are Cristiano Ronaldo (24 goals in 20 consecutive Portugal matches between July 2016 and June 2018) or Messi (23 goals in 20 Argentina matches between October 2021 and time of writing).

The big picture

Nonetheless, Mbappé remains 14 goal adrift of France’s all-time leading goalscorer Olivier Giroud, as the AC Milan man also found the net on Saturday, taking his France goal tally to 54. The PSG star did, however, go one goal closer to overtaking current France teammate Antoine Griezmann, who sits third on Les Bleus‘ all-time scoring chart with 43.

The 3-0 win in Gibraltar was the third in as many Euro 2024 qualifying matches for Didier Deschanmps’ side, who sit atop the Group B standings with nine points as they head into their Matchday 4 clash with Greece (second, six points) at the Stade de France in Paris on Monday night (20:45 CET).
