Liverpool confirm Milner will leave amid Leeds and Brighton reports

Liverpool have confirmed on their official website that James Milner will leave Anfield at the end of his deal, which expires in June – amid reports that Leeds and Brighton are keen on landing the veteran midfielder this summer.

Milner, 37, is about to end an eight-year stint on Merseyside after joining the club from Manchester City in 2015. He will want to remain in the Premier League, as he sits just 35 games behind Gareth Barry’s 652 appearances total.

Brighton have long been linked with a move and The Mail reported this week that Roberto De Zerbi’s side are on pole position to nab the 61-time England star. Leeds, though, cannot be ruled out. Premier League safety is key.

It might be that Milner is waiting to see what happens to Leeds over the next fortnight before making a decision on his future. Milner was born in Leeds, and broke through the academy to play 53 times for the Whites at senior level.

So, it is now confirmed that Milner will be looking for a new club before the start of pre-season – and can be signed for nothing. Brighton are well-positioned given European football looks almost a definite, for the 22-23 campaign.

They also boast Adam Lallana, a player that has made the same journey – Liverpool to Brighton. But a return to the Whites would see Milner go full circle. It would see him go back to where it all started, and play for his club again.

Premier League football is key, for a club to sign Milner. Not because Milner fancies himself, but because he will be very keen to beat the record that Barry currently holds. He is only 15 behind Ryan Giggs. Big summer ahead for him.
