Liverpool interest now viewed as key reason behind £30m Arsenal move

Arsenal’s move in Jurrien Timber was reportedly sparked by Liverpool’s interest in the defender, with the Gunners making a £30m offer for the Ajax star.
FootballTransfers claim that Mikel Arteta’s side opted to hijack the 22-year-old’s potential move to the Premier League after it was discovered by Arsenal that Liverpool and Manchester United were both strongly interested in signing Timber this summer.
As reported by the Athletic, the north London club made a £30m offer for Timber that was swiftly rejected by Ajax, who want at least £50m for the Dutch international. And Liverpool could now be scrambling to get their footing back in completing a deal for the centre-back.
Timber is reportedly open on a move to Arsenal as Arteta looks to add quality defensive depth to his centre-back and right-back options. And although Liverpool have been linked with the Dutchman for some time, the ship might have now sailed on their chance to sign the Ajax talent.
Indeed, Timber seems primed for a Premier League move and now looks eager to jump at the first opportunity he can get to make a transfer to England. And with Arsenal making an opening bid, Liverpool could be stuffed in their own hopes of landing the Netherlands international.
Liverpool could still beat Arsenal to Timber this summer
All hope seems lost for Liverpool in their bid to sign Timber, but there’s still a chance that the Reds can recruit the 22-year-old if they start getting their act together now, with Arsenal still yet to agree terms with Ajax over a deal for the Dutch defender.
As we know, Arsenal are a club that take their time when it comes to transfers like this, and for Liverpool, this gives them an opportunity to swoop for Timber and snag the centre-back right from the Gunners’ noses, a move that will give plenty of supporters joy and given the squad an overall confidence boost.
