Man City star in ‘advanced talks’ to sign for European giants; ‘doesn’t work’ in Guardiola system
Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker is in ‘advanced talks’ with Bayern Munich ahead of a potential summer switch, according to reports.
The England international has been a key player under Pep Guardiola. But now, it seems his time at the Etihad could be coming to an end.
Walker’s current contract at Man City expires in 2024 and the club have no interest in extending it. So, this summer represents the last chance for the Cityzens to get a decent return for his services.
Since signing for Man City back in 2017, he has made 254 appearances. In the process, he has played his part in an unparalleled period of success in the club’s history.
Walker has helped his team to win five Premier League titles, four League Cups, two FA Cups and of course, one Champions League.
Indeed, Man City have just secured a historic treble by beating Inter Milan in the Champions League final. So, the England has won pretty much all there is to win in football during his time at the Etihad.
However, despite still making 39 appearances across all competitions for Man City in 2022/23, he has still fallen down Guardiola’s pecking order somewhat.
In fact, in an interview in April, the manager said that Walker ‘can’t’ play as an inverted wing-back. This has become a key feature of his formations recently.
So, a departure certainly seems to be on the cards and as per previous reports, Bayern are leading the race for his signature.
The report states that Thomas Tuchel has placed Walker on his ‘internal transfer shortlist.’ He could come in as a replacement for Benjamin Pavard, who has been linked with Liverpool.
Now, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern are in ‘advanced negotiations’ with the 33-year-old.
On Twitter, he wrote: “Walker: Advanced talks with FC Bayern now! Concrete negotiations ongoing. Walker keen to join Bayern on permanent deal.
“No agreement between the clubs yet. All parties optimistic to finalise the deal.”
Also, Plettenberg adds that Tuchel has played a key role in convincing Walker to make the switch to the Bundesliga. As a result, everything points towards the Englishman joining Bayern this summer.
This will come as a blow to Sheffield United fans, who have been dreaming of a reunion with their former player.
But, due to his sky-high wages, a return to Bramall Lane was always unlikely for Walker.
Now, all that remains to be seen is how much Bayern will pay for him. Although, with wages of approximately £160,000-a-week, the Cityzens will just be happy to get him off the payroll.
