Kevin de Bruyne’s second half strike cancelled out Vinicius Junior’s opener last week at the Bernabeu to put the scoreline all square ahead of Wednesday’s second leg.
These two teams are widely regarded as being the continent’s best, and whichever team makes it through to next month’s final in Istanbul will undoubtedly be the overwhelming favourites to lift the trophy.
Manchester City are the favourites to progress from Wednesday’s semi final, and are currently on course to win the treble for the first time in the club’s history and became just the second English team to achieve the feat.
Pep Guardiola’s side can secure a fifth Premier League title in six years and become just the second team in the competition’s history to win the trophy in three consecutive years.
Man City have also booked their place in next month’s FA Cup final, where they will meet Manchester United at Wembley, a week before the Champions League final.
The Premier League leaders have won all of their last 14 domestic matches and have won all but two of their 27 home matches in all competitions, including all of their last 13, in which they’ve kept eight clean sheets.
A European trophy is the only thing missing from the Manchester City trophy haul, though many expect that this year will likely be the year they finally break their duck.
Their opponents have had no such trouble in winning European silverware, holding the record for the most European Cup/Champions League trophies with 14, twice as many as the next best, having won five of the last nine editions.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side won the trophy last season, beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final in Paris, having also faced Manchester City in the semi finals.
Man City were a small handful of minutes away from their second consecutive Champions League final before Madrid struck twice in the 90th minute, sending the match to extra time where they ultimately went on and won.
Los Blancos have already tasted silverware this season, having won the Super Cup, Club World Cup and the Copa del Rey, and having missed out on the La Liga title to El Clasico rivals Barcelona, Madrid will be desperate to keep their hands on the Champions League trophy they won last year.
The Spanish side prepared for Wednesday’s game with a 1-0 win over Getafe in a Madrid derby with Marco Asensio scoring the winner for a much changed side.
Ancelotti’s side have only won three of their last six matches in preparation for the tournament, but Real Madrid are a team who know better than most how to win in big European matches.
