Rio Ferdinand claims Chelsea youngster would be his dream signing for Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand claims Chelsea’s youngster Levi Colwill would be his dream signing in defence for Manchester United.

Levi Colwill, who’s been around England’s senior squad in the past week, is a highly-rated defender.

The 20-year-old centre-back has come through the Blues academy at Cobham, but he’s benefited massively from loan spells in the previous two years. In particular, his time at Brighton in the Premier League last season was huge for his development.

Now, Colwill is due back at Stamford Bridge this summer for pre-season.

Journalist Simon Phillips recently explained on his Substack that incoming Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino is adamant that Colwill has a big future at the Bridge.

Former United star Ferdinand has admitted Colwill is exactly the type of centre-half he would love at Old Trafford.

When discussing which defenders he would like United to sign, Ferdinand told FIVE’s YouTube channel: “If I could get him, my dream one would be [Levi] Colwill. But I think Chelsea are going to keep him. I think they’ve seen how good he is now.”

In our view, compliments don’t come much bigger than this from one of the Premier League’s greatest ever defenders.

The hype is certainly beginning to build around Colwill, who’s now joined up with his England teammates for the Under-21s European Championship.

He’s a left-footed centre-back that ticks all the boxes as a modern day defender, which is why many are tipping him to have a long and successful career. Hopefully, he fulfils his potential in Chelsea colours.

We think that Pochettino needs to include Colwill in the Blues first-team squad for the 2023/24 season.

Our guess is that he’s the next superstar to emerge from the Chelsea academy production line, which has delivered so many gems in the past couple of decades.
