Manchester United are reportedly in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer as they look to replace David de Gea.

De Gea has made over 500 appearances for United, but he made some high-profile errors in 2022/23 and there are question marks over his suitability to Erik ten Hag’s system.

The Spain international is out of contract at the end of the month and an extension is yet to be signed as both parties explore their options.

We’ve taken a look at seven goalkeepers that Ten Hag could try and sign in the summer transfer window.

The youngest player on this list, Costa is a modern goalkeeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet and can start attacks with his passing qualities.

He also kept 16 clean sheets in 33 Primeira Liga appearances for Porto in 2022/23 and saved three penalties during their Champions League campaign.

The Portugal international has a €75million release clause in his contract but reports in Portugal suggest Porto could accept a lower bid as they need to raise funds before the end of June in order to comply with FFP.

A Bola claim that United have been scouting the 23-year-old, who could join international team-mates Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot at Old Trafford.

“I grew up with him and he’s my friend, there’s a great relationship between us,” Dalot told Maisfutebol. “I know perfectly well that he has the capacity to one day be one of the best in the world.

“I don’t know if he’ll be at Manchester United or another big club in Europe, but he shows at Porto that he is a big player and has helped the club a lot. If he continues there, I’ll be happy. If he leaves, I hope he has the greatest success at his next club.”

A goalkeeper that is already familiar with Ten Hag’s methods, Onana made 145 appearances under him during their time together at Ajax.

He joined Inter Milan on a free transfer last summer and played an integral role in their run to the 2023 Champions League final, making more saves (47) and keeping more clean sheets (8) than any other goalkeeper in the competition.

The Cameroon international, who was schooled in Barcelona’s La Masia academy, is also regarded as one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers in European football due to his excellent distribution.

According to The Guardian, United are weighing up a potential move for Onana but they could face competition from Chelsea.

Inter reportedly want at least £50million for the goalkeeper and could be forced to sell him to help ease their financial problems.

Mike Maignan

Since joining AC Milan from Lille in the summer of 2021, Maignan has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

The 27-year-old helped Milan reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2022/23 and recently replaced Hugo Lloris in the France national team set-up.

“Maignan is a goalkeeper who brings serenity, as well as having those skills in goal,” Raphael Varane said. “He is a calm person, sure of his strengths, and it is true that, as a defender, feeling this presence behind is important. It’s not just the potential he has, but also the presence he has on the goal.”

According to reports in Italy, Maignan has been left unhappy with Milan’s decision to sack directors Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara and is now considering his future at the club.

But United will have to break the bank to secure his signature as Milan have reportedly set a €100million asking price.

A man with a lot of Premier League experience, Martinez joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020 and has since recorded 39 clean sheets in 110 league appearances.

He has also starred on the international stage, helping Argentina win the Copa America and the World Cup while picking up the Golden Glove award in both tournaments.

Unlike United’s David de Gea, the 30-year-old is a penalty-saving expert and is renowned for his command of his penalty area.

Despite helping Unai Emery’s side qualify for the Europa Conference League, Martinez is reportedly open to leaving Villa Park this summer.

According to TyC Sports reporter Gaston Edul, United, Chelsea and Tottenham are all interested in acquiring his services.

Raya enjoyed another excellent season at Brentford in 2022/23, making more saves (154) and more passes (1,475) than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League.

“His distribution is a major plus point and being at Brentford with the style of football they play, he suits them,” goalkeeper coach Steven Drench told Sky Sports.

“But he could go into any team in the top leagues in Europe and fit in quite well with the confidence he has on the ball. He’s like an extra outfield player.”

The Telegraph claim that United are interested in the 27-year-old, who has just a year remaining on his contract and is refusing to sign a new deal in west London.

Tottenham have reportedly agreed personal terms with Raya but they are yet to meet Brentford’s £40million asking price, which could allow United to swoop in.

While Everton have struggled in recent seasons, Pickford has cemented his status as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old was kept busy in 2022/23 and only Brentford’s David Raya and Fulham’s Bernd Leno made more Premier League saves than Everton’s No.1.

He is a commanding and vocal presence on the pitch and regularly captained the Toffees in the absence of teammate Seamus Coleman.

Despite competition from Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope, Pickford has also managed to keep his place as England’s No.1 and has produced some outstanding performances on the international stage.

According to talkSPORT, he is currently at the top of United’s wanted list and Everton may sell him for around £30million.

Despite only joining Bayern Munich in the January transfer window, Sommer could be on the move once again.

The Switzerland international, who holds the record for the most saves in a Bundesliga game, kept eight clean sheets in 25 appearances for Bayern in the second half of 2022/23.

But he faces an uncertain future at the Allianz Arena as first-choice goalkeeper and club captain Manuel Neuer has now recovered from a broken leg.

United were heavily linked with Sommer last summer and talkSPORT claim that they are ready to reignite their interest in the 34-year-old.

He would be the cheapest signing on this list and would also offer a stop-gap solution ahead of a longer-term addition in the future.
