A Man Utd star who was once the “best young player” they had has confirmed he’ll leave Old Trafford this summer.

Erik ten Hag is clearly benefitting from a Man Utd academy that has produced some of the finest footballers to come through English ranks over the past three decades.

Marcus Rashford is homegrown and is in the midst of his best season to date with 29 goals to his name. Elsewhere, Alejandro Garnacho is making his mark in the final third less than three years after being plucked from Atletico Madrid’s academy when aged 15.

Decent fees could also be collected for the likes of Dean Henderson, Brandon Williams and Scott McTominay if United swing the axe this summer.

However, not all academy graduates who were highly regarded at the time successfully break into the first-team.

Indeed, central midfielder, Ethan Galbraith, was previously compared to Barcelona legends Xavi and Iniesta not so long ago.

A Man Utd source also told the Manchester Evening News Galbraith was the “best young player” outside of the core first-team group back in 2020.

However, that did not translate into first-team minutes, with Galbraith making just a single senior appearance for the club.

A recent MEN report claimed his time at Old Trafford will come to a close this summer.

Galbraith confirms Man Utd exit; likely next move named

Galbraith’s contract back in Manchester expires at season’s end. A new deal will not be offered by Ten Hag and United’s decision-makers, with Galbraith himself taking to social media to confirm his own exit.

The Northern Irishman tweeted: “After six years, my time has come to an end with this magnificent club, Manchester United.

“I want to thank the club, coaching staff and players for helping me become a better player, a better person and for making me feel at home.

“My earliest ambition as a boy was to become a professional footballer and I’m forever grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity and support to fulfil that dream. It’s been a privilege and I feel very honoured to have been able to represent the club.

“I step into the next chapter of my career a more mature, well rounded person and I’m excited for what’s next.”

On the subject of where he might go next, the Mirror reported several unnamed EFL clubs are looking to pounce.

As such, Galbraith appears unlikely to be offered a chance to prove his worth in the Premier League next season.
