Why Luis Suarez’s comments about Brendan Rodgers should excite the Celtic fans

Every Celtic fan knows that Brendan Rodgers is a quality coach. One of the best. Even those that still harbour a grudge against the reported incoming Celtic manager for the way he left the club in 2019 are likely to admit it.

And if there is anyone that can back that up it is former Liverpool striker, Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan was signed by Liverpool in January 2011 and was, at that time the club’s most expensive signing at £22.7m. [BBC]

But it wasn’t until the arrival of Brendan Rodgers in 2012 that Suarez’s Liverpool career really got going. And the legendary striker was quick to credit his former manager for it.

Suarez said [Daily Record], “Celtic already have some very good players – but under Brendan they can go to the next level if they listen to him. For me he is one of the best coaches in Europe and it is no surprise to me that he has got back into the game so quickly.

“He loves the game – he is passionate about not only winning but playing an attractive style of football. I am glad that he will be back coaching in the Champions League – because that for me is where he belongs.

“If it was not for Brendan I am not sure I would have had the career that I did – he invested so much in me.

“He obviously cares about the team and about playing attractive football – but what people maybe won’t know is how much he works one on one with every single player. He will sit down with you as often as he needs to and make a plan for areas you need to improve, talk about strengths, look at a weakness in the opposition that you as a player can exploit.”

Suarez was originally signed by Kenny Dalglish but it was the arrival of Rodgers that really sparked his career.

Suarez then went on to have a glittering career at the Catalan giants where became a four-time La Liga and Copa Del Rey winner, a two-time Spanish Super Cup winner and a Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Club champion.

Suarez also had his well-publicised issues whilst at Liverpool but it seems that the influence of Rodgers helped focus him and start the creation of a world-class striker. Just imagine what he could do with the talent we currently have at Celtic.

Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and Jota are classic examples of raw and bright young talents at Celtic that could kick on at the club like Suarez did at Liverpool. And I’ve not even mentioned the likes of Kyogo, Oh and Alistair Johnston who have all excelled at Celtic so far.

Now I’m not saying these players will go on to play for clubs like Barcelona but Rodgers can improve on what they are already doing for Celtic, exciting times could be ahead for the Hoops fans.
